Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff:

Welcome back to campus. At this time, we would like to remind you all of the resources available to our community from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Below you will find updates about the CAPS department and its services.

CAPS is thrilled to continue its Stepped Care Model after a successful implementation in the Fall 2019 semester. CAPS is happy to report that the fall semester ended on a positive note with no waitlist for individual counseling, and will strive for the same this semester. This customized way of matching students with the best fit of service continues to include Essential Skills<mailto:http://www.uh.edu/caps/services/essential-skills-workshops/> workshops for depression and anxiety and Single Session Therapy<mailto:http://www.uh.edu/caps/services/single-session-therapy/>. For additional information about these services, CAPS invites you to visit its updated website<http://www.uh.edu/caps>.

Additionally, CAPS will continue to offer the following support spaces for two of our student populations:

  * Latinas REACH, a discussion space for Latina graduate students hosted in collaboration with Student Outreach and Support and the Women and Gender Resource Center. For more information, students can contact lmzavala at central.uh.edu<mailto:lmzavala at central.uh.edu>.
  * DREAMERS Speak Series, a supportive space for DREAMER and DACA students hosted in collaboration with Urban Experience Program and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. For more information, students are invited to contact uepuh at central.uh.edu<mailto:uepuh at central.uh.edu>.

As a reminder, our department has a CAPS liaison. Our CAPS liaison is Laura Conner. Laura can be reached via phone at (713) 743 – 5454 or by email at lwconner at central.uh.edu<mailto:lwconner at central.uh.edu>. Our liaison is available to assist our department in several ways, including:

  * Consultation about a student of concern or a student you believe may benefit from CAPS services.
  * Attendance at a departmental meeting to share information on CAPS services.
  * Assistance with coordinating trainings for your department on helping students of concern, stress management, CAPS services, and other topics.

We invite you to contact our liaison for assistance. If you have an urgent concern and our liaison is not able to respond quickly, please call the CAPS Front Desk at 713-743-5454 and ask to speak with an available CAPS consultant on duty.

In order to provide you and students with timely assistance, initial appointments at CAPS are offered on a walk-in basis. No appointment is necessary and there is no fee for these visits. Every student is eligible for walk-in services. If an individual is interested in CAPS services, they can walk in during office hours:

  *   UH Main:
     *   8:30 am – 4 pm, Monday – Friday
  *   UH at Sugar Land:
     *   8:30 am – 4 pm, Mondays and Thursdays

If an individual is experiencing a crisis situation and needs to speak with someone immediately, they may, during business hours:

  1. contact CAPS at 713-743-5454 to speak to the consultant on duty.
  2. walk-in to the CAPS office to meet in person with the consultant on duty.

If it is after business hours, they can call 713-743-5454 and follow the prompts to be connected to the after-hours counselor.

The CAPS Let’s Talk<http://www.uh.edu/caps/outreach/lets_talk.html> program continues to be available 5 days a week at convenient locations across campus. Let’s Talk is a great way to consult with a CAPS’ clinician one-on-one or refer a student who may be hesitant to come to CAPS.

This Spring, we encourage you to take part in one of the 26 scheduled suicide prevention trainings, Question, Persuade, Refer<http://www.uh.edu/caps/outreach/qpr_suicide_prevention.html> (QPR). QPR is a nationally recognized suicide prevention program designed to educate persons to recognize and respond to the signs of suicidal thinking or behavior. You will learn how to ask about suicide, how to persuade the person to contact appropriate assistance, and how to identify referral options. These trainings are free and registration is available by sending an email to tabdulra at central.uh.edu<mailto:tabdulra at central.uh.edu>. Dates and times can be found on our website here<https://uh.edu/caps/outreach/qpr-suicide-prevention/>.

Additionally, CAPS is available to present on a variety of psychoeducational topics to your faculty, staff, or students. Popular presentations include a description of our Stepped Care Model, “How to Help Students of Concern,” stress management, and more. To make a request for CAPS to visit your department to present, please use this Outreach Request Form<http://www.uh.edu/caps/outreach/outreach_request_form.html>. You are also invited to reach out with questions related to custom requests. Please note that evening and weekend requests are more difficult for CAPS to fill, particularly during peak times of the semester. CAPS thanks you for any consideration that can be given to scheduling during work hours and offering flexible days, when possible. Advance notice is appreciated as it allows time to find appropriate coverage.

For your reference, the CAPS website<http://www.uh.edu/caps> has helpful information for faculty/staff and is updated with its current policies, programs, locations, and times. You can also follow CAPS on its CAPS Facebook Page<https://www.facebook.com/UHCAPS/>, Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/uhcaps/>, or Twitter<https://twitter.com/uh_caps> for timely updates.

This is an official message sent by the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering Dean's Office.
