[CCoE Notice] Appointment of New William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Chairman - Dr. Triantafillos J. (Lakis) Mountziaris

It is my great pleasure to announce that after an extended search, a selection has been made for the founding William A. Brookshire Endowed Chair in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE). The position has been granted to Dr. Triantafillos J. (Lakis) Mountziaris. He will formally assume the position of Chairman of the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering on January 1.



Dr. Mountziaris joins the Cullen College from the University of Massachusetts where he served in various roles, including the Department Head of Chemical Engineering, for over 15 years. He has also acted as Program Director for two notable NSF-funded programs - the Process Systems, Reaction Engineering, and Molecular Thermodynamics program, and the Particulate and Multiphase Processes program. In addition to his long list of accolades and awards, including being a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Dr. Mountziaris has collectively both served and led 17 different professional review boards and award committees. His research interests include: synthesis, functionalization, and applications of photonic nanocrystals; novel optical biosensors for rapid quantitative point-of-care medical diagnostics; reaction engineering and process design for sustainable fuels and chemicals production; and fluid dynamics and transport phenomena in complex multiphase flows.



I would like to thank the search committee, led by Dr. Peter Vekilov, for their hard work and dedication throughout this process. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Michael P. Harold, Cullen Engineering Professor, for his unwavering commitment to and leadership of the ChBE Department for the last 20 years. Dr. Harold has held numerous roles in the department, including Chairman for the majority of his tenure, and has made significant contributions in both research and teaching. Under Dr. Harold’s leadership, the department has flourished, maintaining an impressive ranking (No. 36 in the nation) and most recently becoming the Cullen College’s first and only named department.



As Dr. Harold steps down to pursue being a full-time professor within the department, I hope he feels pride in the impressive powerhouse of faculty and acclaimed research he helped guide and build. Dr. Mountziaris will have large shoes to fill, but I have the upmost confidence in his abilities and expect great things from his forthcoming leadership of the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.



Please join me in thanking Dr. Harold and in welcoming Dr. Mountziaris in his new role as Department Chair. I look forward to what I am sure will be a continued path of success for one of our top performing departments.
