Dear Campus Partner,

Greetings and Happy Fall Semester from all of us at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)! We are delighted to liaise with your department for the 2019-2020 academic year. Below you will find updates about our department and services. As the designated CAPS contact, we appreciate your assistance in helping us distribute this information with others in your area.

CAPS is also thrilled to announce new options to help serve our students, including the introduction of Essential Skills workshops for depression and anxiety and Single Session Therapy. For additional information about our services, we invite you to visit our updated website.

Additionally, CAPS has an exciting new offering for Latina graduate students, called:

• Latinas REACH, a discussion space for Latina graduate students hosted in collaboration with Student Outreach and Support and the Women and Gender Resource Center. For more information, students can contact lmzavala at central.uh.edu.

And we are excited to be able to continue to offer:

• DREAMERS Speak Series, a supportive space for DREAMER and DACA students hosted in collaboration with Urban Experience Program and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. For more information, students are invited to contact lmzavala at central.uh.edu.

As a reminder, your department has a CAPS liaison. Your liaison can be reached at 713-743-5454 or via email. Your liaison is available to assist your department in several ways, including:

• Consultation about a student of concern or a student you believe may benefit from CAPS services.

• Attendance at a departmental meeting to share information on CAPS services.

• Assistance with coordinating trainings for your department on helping students of concern, stress management, CAPS services, and other topics.

We invite you to contact your liaison for assistance. If you have an urgent concern and your liaison is not able to respond quickly, please call our Front Desk at 713-743-5454 and ask to speak with an available CAPS consultant on duty.

In order to provide you and students with timely assistance, initial appointments at CAPS are offered on a walk-in basis. No appointment is necessary and there is no fee for these visits. Every student is eligible for walk-in services. If an individual is interested in our services, they can walk in during our office hours:

• UH Main:

o 8:30 am – 4 pm, Monday – Friday

• UH at Sugar Land

o 8:30 am – 4 pm, Mondays and Fridays

O 8:30 am – 11 am, Wednesdays

If an individual is experiencing a crisis situation and needs to speak with someone immediately, they may, during business hours:

1) contact CAPS at 713-743-5454 to speak to the consultant on duty

2) walk-in to our office to meet in person with the consultant on duty.

If it is after business hours, they can call 713-743-5454 and follow the prompts to be connected to the after-hours counselor.

This Fall, we encourage you and your department to take part in one of our 26 scheduled suicide prevention trainings, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR). QPR is a nationally recognized suicide prevention program designed to educate persons to recognize and respond to the signs of suicidal thinking or behavior. You will learn how to ask about suicide, how to persuade the person to contact appropriate assistance, and how to identify referral options. These trainings are free and registration is available by sending an email to tabdulra at central.uh.edu.

Our Let’s Talk program continues to be available 5 days a week at convenient locations across campus. Let’s Talk is a great way to consult with a CAPS’ clinician one-on-one or refer a student who may be hesitant to come to CAPS.

For your reference, the CAPS website has helpful information for faculty/staff and is updated with our current policies, programs, locations, and times. You can also follow us on our CAPS Facebook Page or Twitter for timely updates.

Additionally, CAPS is available to present on a variety of psychoeducational topics to your faculty, staff, or students. Popular presentations include “How to Help Students of Concern,” stress management, and more. To make a request for us to visit your department to present, please use this Outreach Request Form. You are also invited to reach out with questions related to custom requests.

We value the partnership with your department and we look forward to our continued collaboration for another great year at UH.

With good wishes this semester,
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
