Dear Engineering Faculty Member:
If you are teaching a graduate course this Fall, I hope you have received this email from your department’s Graduate Program Director. Other than once graduate course instructor, I have not heard from any other faculty. Can I request you to please read the email below and please let your Graduate Program Director and I know of the students who are in danger of getting a D or F in your course this Fall by 5 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, October 28, 2019) so that we can advise these students accordingly. If you have done so that is even more effective.
Best regards,
Suresh Khator

Subject: Graduate Courses
Dear Graduate Program Directors,
Several of our students receive D or F grades in their courses due to variety of reasons, lack of proper background is certainly one. For international students if they drop below 9 hours they are not full time students. However, Homeland Security allows an international student to be on Reduced Course Load due to academic reasons for one semester during their entire course of study in addition to RCL during their last semester. When a graduate student gets a D or F their GPA drops below 3.0 and it is very hard for them to bring it up to 3.0 as it takes three As to make up for an F and two As to make up for a D.
Beginning this semester, I am requesting you to please ask all your graduate course instructors to let you know the names of the students who are doing poorly in their courses and are in danger of getting a D or F. Either you or I could counsel them to drop the course.
I would like the graduate course instructors to let us know of these students by October 24th (a week from today). I would appreciate to treat this important an urgent. As you know, success of admitted students is a shared responsibility.
Best regards,
Suresh Khator
