[University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering Office of the Dean]

Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff:

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Yashashree Kulkarni will assume the position of our College’s first Director of Research Computing effective August 1st.

In her new role, Dr. Kulkarni will work to transform the College’s computing and information technologies infrastructure and programs in an effort to better engage and educate our community in data science applications and computing. Dr. Kulkarni will also support the creation of academic programs and offerings in engineering computing, information technologies, big data and high performance computing with CACDS, HPE-DSI and our College’s academic units; supervise the Engineering server-high performance computing IT service staff; work closely with the Division of Online Programs and Extension Services to ensure continuous improvement of IT; create and implement non-academic training programs at the undergraduate and graduate level to elevate IT and computational knowledge in our students; coordinate enhancement and support of our College’s IT infrastructure including high performance computing servers, clusters and nodes with University Information Technology; and work with the Director of online programs and extension services (Dr. JR Rao) on potential opportunities in both online and Katy programs related to computer engineering, big data and research computing.

Dr. Kulkarni is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and works in the area of computational mechanics and materials science. She received her Ph.D. in applied mechanics from Caltech in 2007 where she worked on multi-scale modeling of materials. Before joining the University of Houston in 2009, she spent two years as a postdoctoral scholar at University of California San Diego. There she worked on large-scale atomistic simulations and mechanistic modeling of nanostructured materials. Her current research focuses on studying the role of defects and interfaces in nanostructured materials, drawing from statistical mechanics, continuum mechanics, and multi-scale computational modeling. She currently serves as the associate editor for the Journal of Applied Mechanics, the flagship journal of ASME in the field of mechanics. Her honors and awards include the Sia-Nemat Nasser Early Career Award from ASME, the W.T. Kittinger Teaching Excellence Award from University of Houston and the DARPA Young Faculty Award.

I look forward to Dr. Kulkarni’s contributions and future successes in elevating our College’s computing and information infrastructure and programs as well as advancing our goals as outlined in the CCE Vision 2020 strategic plan. Please join me in welcoming and congratulating her in her new role.

Thank you and warm regards,
