Dear Graduate Faculty,

As we begin a new semester, I wanted to send a reminder regarding Masters and PhD students. Please make sure you follow the below guidelines:

1. Full time load for Masters students not receiving $1,000 scholarship is nine hours. All international students must take 9 hours in order to maintain their visa status. For those students receiving In-state tuition waivers (due to $1,000 scholarship or eligible on campus work), we were requiring them to take 4 courses in each of their first two semesters. In out last meeting of the College Graduate Committee, we agreed that we will allow students to take three courses (and the seminar where seminar is required for the Masters degree) in the first semester. This will avoid poor grades earned by many of our Masters students during the first semester. They will be required to take four courses during Spring 2019 thereby completing seven courses during first year. They can then take the remaining three courses during their third semester and graduate. If someone fails to complete seven courses during Fall and Spring semester of their first year, they will be required to take a course in Summer, otherwise their In-state waiver will be revoked.

2. If someone wants to take four courses in the first semester or each of the first two semesters they can do so accelerating their degree completion within one year by taking remaining two courses during Summer.

3. Industrial Engineering requires their students who score low on the Verbal GRE to take a Communications course which is graded on S/U basis. These students should take this course in additon to the three courses that everyone will be taking if they are on In-state tuition waiver.

4. PhD students are awarded GTF for nine hours and they should not enroll for more than 9 hours unless they want to pay from their own pocket the additional hours. Please ask the major professors to encourage their PhD students to take at least two courses during each of the first two semesters thereby getting the course requirements taken care of early in their program.

5. Please make sure that PhD students enroll in PhD Research 8x98 and not Masters Research 6x98. Advisors, please make sure that the required PhD research and dissertation hours are taken. Dissertation hours should not be taken until after the student has passed the Qualifying Exam. Please ensure that BS to PhD students and MS to PhD students are enrolled in the correct hours.

If there seems to be any ambiguity in what I have written, I will appreciate if you would let me know so I can clarify the intent and the requirement of the enrollment policy.

Best regards,

Suresh Khator
