Subject: New course - Experimental Mechanics of Heterogeneous Materials
New course for graduate and senior undergraduate students (undergraduates must seek permission from instructor)
Title: CIVE 7397-07 (19545) Experimental Mechanics of Heterogeneous Materials
Instructor: Dr. Konrad J. Krakowiak<http://www.cive.uh.edu/faculty/krakowiak>
Schedule: TuTh 2:30 – 4:00 pm
Course Description:
This class is directed to students who are interested in experimental methods of materials characterization at microscale, in particular construction materials such as concrete, metals and ceramics. This class is designed around two primary objectives: Objective 1 – introduce students to the instrumented indentation techniques in application to construction materials, Objective 2 – introduce and train students in the experimental techniques of pore structure and materials texture assessment. The class is composed of lectures presenting fundamentals and practical consideration of instrumented indentation (IND), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) as well as gas adsorption techniques (BET). Lectures will be accompanied with labs where the students will be working on related case studies. In this class, I will also review the fundamental concepts in the topic of experimental design and measurements, including error analysis and propagation, error distribution and hypothesis testing.
If you have questions about the class please contact Dr. Krakowiak (kjkrak at uh.edu<mailto:kjkrak at uh.edu>, 713-743-8669)
