CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 1st COLLEGE INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP AWARDS FOR 2018-2019


Dear CCE Faculty:

This is a call for nominations for the following Innovator Awards for the academic year 2018-2019.  Please submit your nominations to dean at egr.uh.edu by COB March 19, 2019. NOTE that only 1 nominee in each category will be accepted from each department.

Career Innovator Award: The highest innovator award accorded to a Cullen College of Engineering Full Professor, this award symbolizes overall career excellence and contributions in innovation and entrepreneurship at UH.

Rising Innovator Award: Given to a Cullen College of Engineering Associate Professor, this award recognizes efforts in innovation and entrepreneurship at UH.

Early Innovator Award: This award recognizes efforts by a Cullen College of Engineering Assistant Professor in innovation at UH.

Young Innovator Award: Given to a Cullen College of Engineering student or postdoc, this award recognizes efforts in innovation and entrepreneurship at UH.

Nomination and qualification requirements:

  *   Career Innovator Award: This award recognizes a track record of successful efforts by CCE faculty in innovation and entrepreneurship during their career at UH. The nominee must be a full professor with a track record of mentorship of students and postdocs toward innovation and entrepreneurship. The nominee must have demonstrated activities related to technology transfer, commercialization and startups such as Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program, Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program, NSF I-CORP, NASA iTech, etc. The amount of the award is $4000. Nomination Package: (a) one letter of recommendation from the department chair, (b) two letters of recommendation from Industry who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s experience with innovation and commercialization, (c) CV.

  *   Rising Innovator Award: This award recognizes efforts by CCE faculty in innovation and entrepreneurship at UH. The nominee must be a tenured associate professor with a track record of mentorship of students and postdocs in innovation and entrepreneurship. The nominee must demonstrate innovation and efforts in transferring technology to practice. The amount of the award is $3000. Nomination Package: (a) one letter of recommendation from the department chair, (b) one letter of recommendation from Industry who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s experience with innovation and commercialization, (c) CV.

  *   Early Innovator Award: This award recognizes efforts by the tenure-track CCE faculty in innovation at UH. The nominee must be an assistant professor in the tenure track for a minimum of 3 years with a record of mentorship of students in innovation. The amount of the award is $2000. Nomination Package: (a) one letter of recommendation from the department chair (b) one letter of recommendation from Industry, (c) CV.

  *   Young Innovator Award: This award recognizes efforts by students or postdocs in innovation and entrepreneurship at UH. The nominee must be a student or postdoc in the Cullen College of Engineering. The undergraduate student nominee should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and for a graduate student a minimum of 3.4 GPA is required. The student or postdoc must demonstrate participation in innovation or entrepreneurship activities that has led to patents, licensing, or startups. The amount of the award is $1000. Nomination Package: (a) one letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor or an instructor (b) one letter of recommendation from Industry, (c) CV, (d) unofficial transcript.

  *   If additional information is needed, the committee will contact the nominees.

The following rules pertain:

•         Departments are restricted to 1 nominee in each category.

•         The Innovator Awards Committee shall make recommendations to the Dean.

•         No nominations will be accepted after the deadline of COB March 19, 2019.
