Topic: “Models of Inquiry Based Learning in Entry-Level Mathematics”

Lecturer, University of Michigan

In this talk, we will explore Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) and active learning in the context of the University of Michigan's 25 years of teaching introductory mathematics courses interactively, and 15 years of having a Center for Inquiry Based Learning in the Department of Mathematics. We will discuss what we do now to teach different courses with IBL and active learning techniques, what the curricula and pedagogies look like, how our programs started and are sustained, and some evidence that our program is successful. In the course of this discussion, we will also consider some of the keys to the longevity and success of our work, and some alternate models of reform in courses at institutions where constraints are different from those we have.
