Abstract: In our daily lives, we are constantly faced with situations requiring us to make rapid yet accurate decisions. Many studies have broadly attributed these control processes to the domain of the prefrontal cortex, yet little is known about the neuronal computations underlying controlled decisions in the human brain. Here we study mechanisms of controlled decision-making at the level of single neurons and local field potentials (LFP) recorded from both dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) in human neurosurgical patients. We show that while a minority of prefrontal neurons encode relevant information by selectively changing their firing rates, the majority employ a coding scheme based on modulation of temporal patterns of neuronal firing in relation to oscillatory potentials. We further show how temporal coding in dACC and dlPFC interacts to recruit neuronal resources required to optimize decision making. Together these results shed light on the neural computations underlying a critical and archetypically human cognitive process.
