[University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering Office of the Dean]

Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff:

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Dan Burleson as the UH Cullen College of Engineering’s first Director for Engineering Student Innovation and Design Experience (ESIDE) effective September 1, 2019.

Burleson will work to transform the Cullen College Engineering Design Experience for graduating juniors and seniors to encourage student innovation and success in developing unique multidisciplinary projects addressing critical societal challenges. To achieve this goal, Burleson will build consensus and engagement among the engineering faculty; identify and coordinate essential resources and opportunities; develop strategy and a web presence for ESIDE, and work to increase awareness of ESIDE and Cullen College students through encouraging participation in showcase events and design competitions.

He will collaborate closely with the leadership of UH at Katy to fully leverage the new cutting-edge engineering design studios at that location; the newly established Research Computing Division at the college to encourage studentengagement in design activities with data, computing and e-media; the Engineering Program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship; as well as the associate dean of research and facilities and the industrial relations and intellectual property manager at the college.

Burleson has been a valued member of the Cullen College community since 2010 – initially working as a graduate research assistant while pursuing his doctoral degree in environmental engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in 2015. More recently, he served with two successful Cullen College initiatives – as an instructional assistant professor with the First Year Experience and as outreach director for the Program for Mastery in Engineering Studies (PROMES).

I look forward to Dr. Burleson’s contributions towards enhancing innovation and success for our students involved in the Cullen College Design Experience as well as helping us accomplish the CCE Vision 2020 strategic plan and 50-in-5 goals.

Please join me in congratulating Dan Burleson on this exciting opportunity and wishing him the best of luck in his new role.

Thank you and warm regards,
