Topic: “Summer Institutes Program on Scientific Teaching and Development of a Teachable Tidbit”

In this workshop, Knapp will present a summary of the major aspects of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Summer Institute’s curriculum, including education research, active learning, effective assessment, and inclusive teaching. The Summer Institutes are dedicated to STEM education reform, improving science literacy, attracting more diverse students to research and increasing the number of students who become scientists at colleges and universities across the United States. The Summer Institutes program comprises intensive multi-day workshops that introduce STEM educators to the principles of evidence-based teaching. This overview of essential elements of effective teaching and evaluation will be followed by a description and discussion of the creation of a “teachable tidbit,” a core component of the workshop curriculum.  Development of teachable tidbits can be used to spur the integration of the principles of scientific teaching with teaching materials that enhance student comprehension and/or understanding of a specific scientific concept or subject area.
