ABSTRACT

To correct the fact that little commercialization funding flows to Houston, Fannin Innovation Studio was created to train experienced life sciences entrepreneurs. Fannin in-licenses technologies from local academic institutions, that we develop and de-risk internally until it is ready to be spun out. In our hybrid approach, Fannin serves as both the management team and the seed investor, collaborating with the academic inventors to advance the technology. Our interns and fellows gain critical hands-on commercialization experience. With over 170 interns and fellows in the last seven years, this program has grown to become among the largest of its kind and is helping grow Houston’s next generation of CEOs. I will share the context for creation of the Studio, how it is addressing the critical bottleneck to life sciences commercialization in Houston, and how it complements other Houston initiatives.
