Development of Aortix™, A Circulatory Support Device

Dr. Jace Heuring, Chief Scientific Officer, Procyrion,

ABSTRACT

The development of Aortix will be described. Aortix is a pump thinner than a #2 pencil. It is the first percutaneous mechanical circulatory support (pMCS) device whose design is uniquely suited to address cardiorenal syndrome in chronic heart failure patients who are failing medical therapy, but not sick enough for risky surgical interventions like heart transplants or LVADs. The unique placement of the small but powerful micropump in the descending thoracic aorta is intended to simultaneously unload the heart and support the kidneys by accelerating native blood flow in the aorta.

Jason Heuring is an experienced technology entrepreneur and engineer with deep management experience. Prior to joining Procyrion, Jace was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence with Austin Ventures. He founded and staffed a start-up company developing hardware and software components for sensor fusion, interpretation, and control. Prior to Austin Ventures, Jace was an Associate Principal in the Houston office of McKinsey & Company with a high-tech and operations focus. In these and other roles, he directly managed various projects with budgets exceeding $10 million. Jace was also the co-founder of IP-Mill, Inc., a technology start-up company which was acquired in 2000. While an undergrad, he was a research assistant at the Microelectronic Research Laboratory and the Applied Research Laboratories at the University of Texas at Austin. Jace received his Ph.D. in Robotics and Computer Vision from Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and a B.S. in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering with Highest Honors from the University of Texas at Austin
