NSF I-Corps Program - Engineering Faculty Info Session
University of Houston has an NSF-funded I-Corps Site which provides information and support for our faculty and students who are interested in becoming involved with innovation and entrepreneurial activities here at UH.
The I-Corps program is designed to support the very early stages of product and business development based upon an approach known as the Lean Start-Up Model. This approach to innovation and entrepreneurship involves developing a business model for an idea or technology that is based on the concept of “customer discovery” as a way of testing whether or not the business model has merit. It also has the advantage of identifying potentially novel commercial applications of an idea or technology based on customer feedback.
Faculty or students who wish to participate in the UH I-Corps Site program do not necessarily need to have developed intellectual property (IP) or have a UH-patented technology to serve as the basis of their idea, rather the UH I-Corps Site provides a very early means of testing whether or not a nascent idea or technology has commercial potential. Participants in formal UH I-Corps programming, such as an UH I-Corps Short Courses, RED Labs or NSF Regional Workshops, are eligible to receive up to $1500 in support. Successful competition of the programs may provide the opportunity to apply for the NSF National program, which gives eligible teams a $50,000 grant.
