The Research Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, awards grants in the following categories: laboratory research in the basic sciences aimed at finding a cure for SCI/D; clinical and functional studies of the medical, psychosocial and economic effects of SCI/D, and interventions to alleviate those effects; design and development of assistive technology for people with SCI/D, including improving the identification, selection and utilization of assistive technology devices; and fellowships for postdoctoral scientists, clinicians, and engineers to encourage training and specialization in the field of spinal cord research.

The foundation is focused on funding projects grounded in basic laboratory science and the education of scientists working on breakthroughs directed at finding a cure for paralysis or its secondary medical conditions, and technologies associated with SCI/D.  These projects should be designed to find better treatments and cures for paralysis; support efforts to improve the quality of life of individuals with SCI/D until improved clinical treatments, technologies or cures are discovered; and/or train postdoctoral fellow investigators and encourage them to specialize in the area of spinal cord research.





The foundation supports one or two-year grants in four areas of emphasis at varying funding levels.

1) Basic Science: Grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded in support of laboratory research in the basic sciences related to spinal cord injury or disease. Grants will be funded up to $75,000 for one year or up to $150,000 over two years



2) Clinical Applications: Grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for clinical and functional studies of the medical, psychosocial, and economic effects of spinal cord injury or disease and/or interventions proposed to alleviate these effects.

3) Design and Development: Grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for the design and development of new or improved rehabilitative and assistive devices that improve function for individuals with spinal cord injury or disease.



4) Postdoctoral Fellowships: Fellowship grants of up to $100,000 over two years will be awarded to postdoctoral students in basic science, clinical applications, or design and development intended to encourage training and specialization in the field of spinal cord research.

Eligible applicant institutions must be located in the United States or Canada. However, investigators and fellows are not required to be U.S. or Canadian citizens. All grant applicants must have a professional degree: PhD or MD preferred, but a master’s will be acceptable under some circumstances.

Senior fellows are encouraged to apply as principal investigators. Postdoctoral individuals are eligible to apply for fellowship support within four years of receiving a PhD or completing an MD residency. Graduate students can participate in foundation-related research and be paid from a foundation award. Graduate students cannot apply for a foundation grant either as a fellow or as a principal investigator.
