To the Instructors in Engineering,
There is an Engineering Career Fair coming up 10AM to 4PM on Thursday, February 1st.
I am making a request on behalf of our students (in particular our students in 2xxx, 3xxx, and 4xxx engineering courses). Many of the students use the Career Fair as a step towards getting a job, on which they appropriately place a high priority. Some may even choose to miss a class, despite the clear risk this involves. I cannot directly condone that value judgment. However, I can ask that you consider whether you might be willing to change the date of a quiz or other similar assessments to another day other than February 1st, if that does not significantly affect your course and its effectiveness.
If you read my careful wording here, it should be clear that all the choices are up to you. All such choices are, indeed, entirely up to you. For myself, on the days of career fairs, I have postponed a quiz in my own course, but lectured during the full period. You should do what you think is appropriate for your course. The web page for the Engineering Career Center is:
http://www.egr.uh.edu/career/
Thanks,
fc
