Dear University of Houston Faculty,
The Center for ADVANCING Faculty Success’ goals include recruitment and retention of women and women of color, along with moving more women into administrative leadership positions and improving overall structural resources and support for faculty. Recruitment efforts are progressing and the diversity of our incoming faculty cohorts have improved. However, the last faculty climate survey indicates that climate and support in departments is lower for women and minority faculty than for majority faculty.
In order to more effectively address climate and support issues, we will be offering UH gender ally workshops this semester and during Spring 2019. The goal of the gender ally workshops are to provide faculty who want to help their colleagues understand exactly what types of behaviors can be helpful in advancing the careers of women and women of color faculty. In preparation for the workshops, all tenure/tenure-track UH faculty will be receiving an email from Rice University requesting participation in a Workplace Support survey. The Center for ADVANCING UH Faculty Success, in conjunction with Rice University, seeks to understand the current level of supportive behaviors for women and women of color at UH. This survey will provide critical data around the development and evaluation of our ally training program. Participation in the survey does not mean that you will need to participate in the gender ally workshop.
Dr. Mikki Hebl, Professor and Chair of Psychology at Rice University, Dr. Eden King, Associate Professor of Psychology at Rice University, and Dr. Christiane Spitzmueller, Professor of Psychology at UH, head this project. The project has been vetted by the UH Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) and ensures complete confidentiality of responses. Only aggregate level data will be reported back, and the lowest unit of aggregation in this round of the survey will be the unit level. Only Drs. Hebl and King of Rice University will have access to individual level data.
The survey is voluntary and will take less than five minutes to complete.
If you have further questions about the Workplace Support survey, please contact Christiane Spitzmueller, Managing Director UH Center for ADVANCING Faculty Success, at 713-743-4210 or at cspitzmu at central.uh.edu<mailto:cspitzmu at central.uh.edu>.
Sincerely,
Christiane Spitzmueller
