Dear Faculty:

The next NSM Faculty Development Workshop is scheduled for Friday, December 2, from 11:30 am – 12:45 pm in M.D. Anderson Library, Room 306. Lunch will be provided; please RSVP using the link below. A flyer is attached.

Topic: “Stimulating Genuine Teamwork in a Large Enrollment Core Course”

Presenters:
Dr. Ann O. Cheek and Dr. Ana I. Medrano
Instructional Associate Professors, University of Houston
Department of Biology & Biochemistry

Coursework that necessitates and evaluates teamwork is required in all Core Courses. We have tried three different types of teamwork assignments in large (150–450 student) Introductory Biology lecture sections: group projects, team exams, and team case discussions. We will discuss how we evaluated the effectiveness of each type of assignment with regard to four criteria: student perception, student attainment, professor effort, and professor perception. We have found that different types of assignments can be equally effective for student attainment of knowledge and skills, but that faculty members differ in which type of assignment they prefer to use.

I hope you will join us on December 2!
