[CCoE Notice] Important policy change coming up for a vote

Dear Colleagues:

In the next meeting of the UH Undergraduate Committee (UC) on March 23, the
following "Undergraduate grade replacement" or grade forgiveness policy is
coming up for a vote. If approved by the UC, it will almost certainly
become a part of the 2016-17 UH Undergraduate Catalog.

The summary of the proposal is this:

The attached proposal would modify the University of Houston undergraduate
catalog to allow students to repeat up to 12 credits worth of courses taken
at the University of Houston and have those later attempts replace the
original grade when calculating a student’s GPA.

As an illustrative example, under this new policy, if a first year student
receives an F, and then an A, in two attempts of the ENGI 1331 computing
course, the student will be able to petition to have the F go away, and not
count towards the UH GPA.

I understand that the SGA (Student Government Association) is strongly
pushing to have this proposal approved.

I am not in favor of this policy, and unless persuaded otherwise, I intend
to vote no (the other two votes on the UC for our college are by Dr.
Trombetta and Dr. Epling).

The full proposal (and a spreadsheet showing what other Tier-1 schools do
in this regard) is attached.

I welcome your input and feedback before the vote on March 23.
