Your Brain on Dance
Date: February 12th
Time: 5:30pm - 7:30 pm
Cost: Free
Join us at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, in the UH Engineering Building 1<http://www.uh.edu/maps/buildings/?short_name=d> Atrium for the fourth in a series of events as part of a groundbreaking collaboration<http://blafferartmuseum.org/brain/> between Blaffer Art Museum, Houston-based artists, and the University of Houston's Noninvasive Brain-Machine Interface Systems Laboratory<https://www.facebook.com/UHBMIST>, seeking clues to what happens in the brain as people create, perform, and contemplate art.
Wearing skullcaps equipped with sensors, UH dancer-choreographers John Beasant III<https://johnbeasant.wordpress.com/>, Teresa Chapman<http://chapmandance.com/About/Bio.html>, and Becky Valls<http://beckyvalls.com/> will play a variation of Exquisite Corpse<https://www.moma.org/learn/moma_learning/max-ernst-levade-the-fugitive>, a collaborative, chance-based game made famous by the Surrealists in the 1920s - but they'll be dancing rather than drawing.
The demonstration will be followed by a discussion of the dancers' process and the goals of the research - funded by the National Science Foundation (#BCS 1533691<http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1533691&HistoricalAwards=false>) and led by engineering professor Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal<http://www.ece.uh.edu/faculty/contreras-vidal> - to study connections between the brain and creativity, expression, and the perception of art.
Future Your Brain on Art<http://blafferartmuseum.org/brain/> events will feature similar collaborations between artists in other disciplines, including the visual, performing, and literary arts.
This project is an outgrowth of the Blaffer Art Museum Innovation Series<http://www.blafferartmuseum.org/webPast/innovation/>, launched in Spring 2015 to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations between the arts and sciences.
