UH Cougars forKids community volunteer service program at the University of Houston

In 2007, the College of Technology created this program for students and faculty to volunteer their time and service to help children of all ages who are patients at several Houston children’s hospitals. Currently, the participating hospitals are: Texas Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital, The Methodist Hospital, Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Health Bridge Children’s Hospital. Volunteer service activities include reading to children, playing games with them, helping them with their studies, and just becoming mentors to these kids. In addition to providing volunteer services to kids in hospitals, our program also includes tutoring and mentoring services at many local area schools to enhance their learning opportunities and contribute to their overall academic success. And as recently as last year, we have also begun a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Houston who provide mentoring services for numerous at-risk youngsters across Houston.

Cougars for Kids volunteers have contributed more than 6,000 volunteer hours in Houston’s hospitals since 2007. It typically takes about a month to complete the orientation and screening process before volunteer service can begin. During the Fall and Spring semesters, the College of Technology conducts three or four Cougars for Kids Orientations on campus for new student volunteers. Funding has been acquired to purchase T-Shirts with the Cougars for Kids logo and identification. T-Shirts are given to UH volunteers upon completion of their first 10 hours of volunteer service. Students receive no grade enhancements for their service.

Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of kids.

With best regards,

Jerry
