[CCoE Notice] Operation School Supply 2016

Greetings to the wonderfully generous people of the Cullen College of Engineering!

Last year, you were kind enough to help out with Operation School Supply.  This is a project spearheaded by Dr. Simon Bott’s chemistry class this session to collect donated school supplies. They distribute these to elementary and middle school children in the Greater Houston area who, for whatever reason, do not have their own.

Last year, with your help, the class collected nearly 17,000 items which they gave to students at 31 different schools, all but one of which was in HISD.  All of the schools were those in which over 90% of the students qualify for free lunches.  In addition, we received what was left over from the City of Houston event at UH (about 2,000 backpacks with a few supplies). I do not know the exact number, but more than 4000 students benefitted from the project.  In addition, the majority of the schools were within 2 miles of UH.

This year we a bit behind in getting the word out to engineering staff, but we still have time. We have until Monday, to be exact. But what are engineers if not problem solvers?!!! We do need to stress that university-owned supplies cannot be donated, however! That should go without saying, but just want to make sure that your problem-solving skills don’t lead you down that path.

The deadline for the project is August 15th.Therefore, you have this weekend to pick up some school goodies while you are out and about. The drop-off box is located in suite E316.

We need to stress that this is DIFFERENT from the City of Houston/UH project on August 13th for which you have been receiving e-mails etc.  Both are REALLY GOOD CAUSES :)
