Graduate Associate Deans:

The University of Houston’s Graduate School and Office of the Provost is excited to launch a new program called the Future Faculty Fellowship (F3) aimed at preparing graduate students for careers in academia. Fellows will participate in a range of professional development activities, including workshops, discussion panels, topical seminars, and online training focused on effectively engaging, instructing, and assessing learners in diverse disciplines while increasing the awareness of the demands of faculty life as scholars and educators. While participation in the F3 program is specifically designed to significantly enhance the Fellow’s future chances of securing a permanent faculty position, the F3 program also develops a professional skill-set equally important for non-academic careers.

The F3 program will follow the overall framework and best practices developed by the Center for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning<http://www.cirtl.net/> (CIRTL), a National Science Foundation<http://www.nsf.gov/> (NSF) funded network of 23 premier universities across the nation of which the University of Houston is a member of. CIRTL is governed by a commitment to career development of future faculty members and views teaching as a research practice that recognizes a wide diversity of learners. The strategies and best practices developed by the Center have been acknowledged both nationally and internationally as highly effective in guiding the professional development of future faculty members. Recently, CIRTL has partnered with the Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation<https://community.mygreatlakes.org/web/community/partnerships/cirtl-network.html>, which has committed substantial funding ($3.2m) in support of the CIRTL mission.

Recognizing that effective teaching is an integral part of being a successful faculty member, the Fellows will first attend an intensive four-week half-day boot camp (7/27/15-8/24/15) before the beginning of the fall term on best practices in teaching and applying research techniques in a classroom environment. Each Fellow will receive a $1,800 scholarship upon the completion of the camp.

Following the boot camp, each Fellow will be expected to engage in a required teaching practicum involving close interaction with undergraduate students in the fall semester, facilitated either by their individual academic programs/department/colleges or by the Graduate School. In the latter case, a cohort of 6-10 Fellows will oversee several sections of “Exploratory Studies” seminar for freshmen with undeclared majors, a unique opportunity to experience teaching outside of their disciplines. Continuing participation in supervised teaching in the spring semester, subject to the availability of appropriate teaching assignments, will allow fellows to achieve additional expertise.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
The candidates for the F3program can be nominated by their advisors, programs, departments, or colleges. Self-nominations are welcome with the department and/or college endorsement. Nominations are due by 5pm on June 27, 2015 and should be sent to gradschool at uh.edu<mailto:gradschool at uh.edu>. The Fellows will be selected from the applicant pool by the F3program oversight committee. The decisions will be announced by July 10, 2015.

The call for nomination is attached.
