[CCoE Notice] Linux/UNIX - Free Intro & Intermediate Level Workshops offered next week

Dear Engineering Faculty and Staff,

Welcome to the Spring 2015 semester!  The EERC/ECC will offer two levels of Linux workshops - an Introduction to Linux and Intermediate Linux - along with the General UH Engineering Computing Essentials Orientation next week.

The Introduction to Linux Workshop* will be offered on Wednesday, Jan 28th, from 2:00-4:00pm and repeated on Thursday, Jan 29th, from 10:00am-12:00pm.  Both Intro workshops are scheduled in the new EERC, Engineering Building 2, Room E218.

Topics covered include:
-Linux/UNIX Systems Overview
-Interoperability with Windows
-Linux/UNIX Accounts - Email & Personal Web Page
-File Systems, Permissions
-System Commands & Applications

The Intermediate Linux Workshop* will be offered on Friday, Jan 30th, from 10:00am-12:00pm.  This workshop is scheduled in the ECC, Engineering Building 2, Room W129.

Topics covered include:
                -Input, Output & Pipes
                -Compiling UNIX Software Packages
                -Symbolic and Hard Links
                -Setting Environment Variables
                -File Transfers & Processes

*Students planning to attend the Linux/Unix workshops MUST have a UNIX account and be able to login to UNIX before the workshop begins.  UNIX accounts are created at the ECC Front Desk.


The General UH Engineering Computing Essentials Orientation will be offered on Wednesday, Jan 28th, from 11:00am-12:00pm, and Thursday, Jan 29th, from 2:00-3:00pm. Both sessions are scheduled in the new EERC, Engineering Building 2, E218.

Topics covered include:
                -Computing Facilities for Engineering Students
                -User Accounts - CougarNet, Blackboard Learn
                -Network Security & Free Anti-Virus Software
                -User Profiles, Data Storage & Storage Limits
                -UH Email Alias
                -Accessing the UH Wireless Network
                -Free Software Application Training

All workshops and orientations are "hands-on" and free to Engineering students.  Seating is limited - no reservations are required.

Faculty, if you would like to arrange a software training workshop for your class, please let me know.
