The next NSM Faculty Development Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, from 4-5 pm in MD Anderson Library, Room 306. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Michael Klymkowsky from the University of Colorado.

Topic: “Toward a Coherent Curriculum in Biology: Designing, Delivering, and Evaluating Our Educational Efforts”

Michael Klymkowsky
Professor, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
Co-Director, CU Teach
University of Colorado, Boulder

Scientific literacy, broadly defined, is increasingly critical. Like any higher order skill, it requires mastery, through practice, of underlying concepts, relevant observations, and the ability to use them to generate analytically coherent models. To achieve this goal, instructors need to understand student thinking as well as to explicitly articulate the desired learning outcomes of their course (and overall curriculum). This shapes course content, teaching strategies, and assessments. I will describe our efforts in this area through the development of the Biology Concept Inventory (BCI) and beSocratic formative assessments, collaborative efforts to build more effective courses in general chemistry and molecular biology, and will consider the broader question of the forces that encourage and obstruct the design and delivery of coherent disciplinary curricula.

Dr. Klymkowsky pursues research in developmental biology and in education. He is the Co-Director of the CU Teach program for training and certification of future teachers. Dr. Klymkowsky is a strong proponent of generating curriculum which engages students. He will discuss his efforts in course redesign and in developing concept inventories to assess student understanding. The basic principles are applicable across subject areas.

I hope you will join us next week!

Donna Pattison
