Good afternoon,

This is the update to the Internet Explorer security issue reported earlier this week. Most computers in the college already has Windows Automatic Updates configured, and should have this security update already applied. If your computer does not have the "Security Update for Internet Explorer..." applied, please EMAIL me back with your COMPUTER NAME so I can check and apply the update as needed. Please pass this information onto your lab computer users so they can do the same.

Sincerely,

UH Faculty, Staff and Students:

This week a security issue was identified with all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to potentially steal information from a user's computer. Yesterday, Microsoft released an update for Internet Explorer that fixes the vulnerability.

What Should You Do?

Verify whether or not the security update has already been applied to your computer through Automatic Updates, and if not, manually install the update.

To verify if the security update has already been installed:

 1. Open the Control Panel on your computer.
 2. Select Windows Update.
 3. Select View update history.
    * If the Security Update for Internet Explorer has been installed, your computer is protected.
    * If the Security Update for Internet Explorer has NOT been installed, you will need to manually install it to protect your computer.

To manually install the Security Update for Internet Explorer:

 1. Open the Control Panel on your computer.
 2. Select Windows Update.
 3. View the updates available for install.
    * If the Security Update for Internet Explorer is listed, ensure the update is checked, and install. Restart your computer if it does not restart automatically.
    * If the Security Update for Internet Explorer is NOT listed, search for available updates, select the appropriate update, and install. Restart your computer if it does not restart automatically.

For assistance with installing updates, please contact your local IT support or the IT Support Center via email at support at uh.edu<mailto:support at uh.edu> or via phone at 713-743-1411.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact UIT Security via email at security at uh.edu<mailto:security at uh.edu> or via phone at 832-842-4695.
