Monte Carlo for Proton Radiotherapy
By
Pablo Yepes
Department of Physics and Astronomy
Rice University
Abstract
Radiation Therapy is one of the main modalities for cancer treatment. The use of protons in radiation therapy has clear theoretical advantages over other more traditional modes of radiation. However, the use of protons requires better dose calculation engines. Monte Carlo has proven to provide the best results. However, it requires large calculation times. I will present the work carried out at Rice University to develop an engine with the same accuracy as traditional Monte Carlo programs, which requires a fraction of the computational resources.
