[CCoE Notice] Notice of Student Deaths

Everyone,

Very recently, we lost two of our students, and questions arose within the departments about what to do.  I am sending again the guidelines below that were given to us in 2012.  Heaven forbid this terrible situation happening again; but if it does, I hope these guidelines prepare you on appropriate actions to take.

Subject: Communication upon Notice of Student Death

Dear Deans:

On occasion, communication regarding a student death may come to your attention through both official and unofficial channels. After official notice of student death is confirmed by the Dean of Students Office there are certain protocols transacted at the university for the benefit of the student and their family.

The Dean of Students Office under their Student Affairs protocol respond to the notice of a deceased student. In that process they work closely with Academic Affairs to facilitate various transactions, for example amendment of the student's academic or financial records and coordination of official university correspondence.

We hope you will never receive such news.  However, for the reasons listed above, and especially for us to work with the family, we ask you to please contact the Dean of Students Office immediately upon learning such news:
