[CCoE Notice] FW: Linux/UNIX Workshop and General Computing Orientation offered next week

Good morning,

It seems many students were not aware of the Linux workshops designed to help them gain familiarity with the operating system.  Please relay this message to as many students as possible since knowledge of Linux will help them with their research here at UH and with the rest of their career as an Engineer.  The first two classes totaled seven students, so we're hoping the next class tomorrow will be more fruitful.

Zain Marvi, Engineering's System Admin, will be conducting the Linux workshops next week.  If you plan to send your students to the workshop, and your students need to have knowledge of a specific Linux topic, Zain can customize the workshop to include that information.

Linux/UNIX Workshop:
The Linux/UNIX Workshop will be offered for free to any Engineering student on the following dates:
Wed, Jan 22, from 2PM-4PM
Thurs, Jan 23, from 10AM-12PM
Friday, Jan 24, from 10AM-12PM

Topics covered in this hands-on workshop include:
* Linux/UNIX Systems Overview
* Interoperability with Windows
* Linux/UNIX Accounts - Email and Personal Web Page
* File Systems, Permissions
* System Commands and Applications

Please note:  Students MUST have a Linux/UNIX account and be able to login to Linux/UNIX prior to class.  Students should get their Linux/UNIX account at the ECC Front Desk at least 1 day prior to the date of the workshop they plan to attend.  All workshops are scheduled in the ECC (Engineering Building 2, Room W129)


General Computing Essentials Orientation:

The UH Engineering Computing Essentials Orientation is offered for free to any Engineering student on the following dates:
                Wed, Jan 22, from 11AM-12PM
                Thurs, Jan 23, from 2PM-3PM
