Dear Cullen College Faculty,
Our Cullen College of Engineering has outstanding doctoral students who contribute significantly to our college's research portfolio. One such contribution is the research embodied in the Ph.D. dissertation. In recognition of this effort, I am pleased to announce a new award, the Cullen College of Engineering Best Dissertation Award, which will commence with the current spring semester.
The award criteria is included below, and the nomination form is attached to this email. You may also access the award criteria and the nomination form, at http://www.egr.uh.edu/announcement/201404/best-dissertation-award.
For this initial call for nominations, note the special deadline of April 18, 2014 to submit the department's nomination for consideration by the College Selection Committee.

BEST DISSERTATION AWARD
CULLEN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
DESCRIPTION
This award will be given once in the fall (includes summer graduates) and once in the spring. The recipient receives an honorarium of $1,000.
ELIGIBILITY
Students who will have been awarded the Ph. D. at fall (includes summer graduates) or spring graduation of the year they successfully defended and submitted their dissertation.
NOMINATION PROCEDURE
Each Department may nominate one student. The nomination is due by 5 pm on the first Friday in November and April for the fall and spring terms, respectively. Submission of the application packet as one file in pdf format is electronic via email to: dean at egr.uh.edu<mailto:dean at egr.uh.edu>. The file should be titled "BestDissertation_TermYr_Lastname_FirstName".
The electronic submission needs to include in the following order:
1. Nomination form<http://www.egr.uh.edu/sites/ccoe.egr.uh.edu/files/files/best_dissertation_award_nomination_form.pdf>
2. Brief (3-page) CV specifically listing
* Education and employment history
* Honors and publications
3. Nominating letter from the Dept Chair/Program Director. The letter should comment on:
* The candidate pool and selection process within the Dept/Program
* The originality and importance of the research
* Other excellence indicators, e.g., inventions, patents, job offers
4. A letter of recommendation from the dissertation advisor (max 2 pages long, single-spaced, font size 12, 1-inch margins) emphasizing the
* The potential for significant contribution to the field
* The nominee's comparative publication record and the quality of the journals
5. A description of the dissertation research and its conclusions, not to exceed ten double-spaced numbered pages (in font size 12 point), written by the nominee. Appendices containing other material such as charts, figures or tables may be included, up to 5 additional pages (the Award Committee may request to see the entire dissertation)
6. A double-spaced lay person summary of up to one page, including a section on the significance of the research, for use in College communications and media announcements.
SELECTION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS
The winner will be chosen by a faculty committee appointed by the Dean annually for this purpose in consultation with the Associate Dean for Graduate Students and the Associate Dean for Research. Selection will be based on the originality and importance of the research, and the potential for the student to make a significant contribution to the discipline. The Award will be announced via College communications on or before University graduation ceremonies in December and May for fall (includes summer) and spring terms, respectively.
