Sir Mark Walport began serving as Chief Scientific Adviser to HM Government and Head of the UK Government Office for Science in April 2013. He was director of the Wellcome Trust from 2003 to 2013. Prior to that he was the head of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College London. Sir Mark Walport is member of the Prime Minister's Council for Science and Technology. He is co-chairing one of the Prime Minister's 'Champion Groups' on dementia, looking at research. He received a knighthood in the 2009 New Year Honours List for services to medical research and was elected as Fellow of The Royal Society in 2011.
In September, the IPCC published its first major assessment of the science of climate change since 2007.  Sir Mark Walport will discuss the implications of this eagerly awaited report.  He will focus on the different possible policy responses to what is now known about climate change, including the challenges and opportunities for scientific research and technological development.
