[CCoE Notice] Engineering Computing Update

Dear Colleague,

Last year we had quite a turnover with both Bryan and John leaving engineering computing.  During this period, we hired Zain Marvi as Systems Administrator I.  Zain is responsible for our Lenux/Unix side of the house and does the general maintenance of these servuers.  You can contact Zain at: zhmarvi at Central.UH.EDU<mailto:zhmarvi%40Central.UH.EDU>.

After an open search for the Director of Engineering Computing, we selected Kiet Luong as the director.  Kiet has been with the Engineering Computing for several years and had been filling the director's role on interim basis for past several months.  I want to thank the members of the search committee, Dennis Fouty, Assoc V.P. for IT and Chief Information Officer; Pradeep Sharma, Chair, Mechanical Engineering; Yashshree Kulkarni, Faculty Member, Mechanical Engineering; Howard Gifford, Faculty Member, Biomedical Engineering and Kalyana Nakshatrala, Faculty Member, Civil and Environmental Engineering.  Please congratulate Kiet on his well deserved promotion.

During this period, we have been well supported by Keith Crabb and his group in high performance computing.  We have also posted our second vacant position for Systems Administrator II for providing support for our faculty engaged in High Performance and Cluster Computing.  We hope to fill this position by January 2014.  We are thankful to Keith Crabb's group for providing continuing support in this area.

I have also requested Dr. Dennis Fouty to conduct a review of our computing resources and functions sometime early Spring.  He has done similar reviews for other College computing departments.
