Offshore jumpers are typically subject to vortex induced vibration (VIV). These oscillations will reduce the fatigue life and eventually lead to catastrophic failure in offshore applications. In this thesis, we mainly introduced a novel passive vibration control device, Pounding Tuned Mass Damper (PTMD), and its application on the short-pipe submerged in water tank. Initially, we measured the natural frequencies of a full scale jumper in the field. And then we designed a particular vibrating system consisting of four springs and a short-pipe in a water tank, based on the natural frequency of the full scale jumper. The PTMD was applied on this short-pipe for vibration control in water; the corresponding results are thoroughly discussed as well. To ensure the effectiveness of the underwater PTMD, a direct method for predicting the natural frequency of the pipe and PTMD was built and verified through experiments. Furthermore, we also analyzed the robustness of the PTMD submerged in water, especially the effect of the frequency range on the performance of the vibration control of the PTMD in water. Hence, this thesis would contribute to better understand the PTMD behavior and its application for vibration control of the structures in water.
