"Life's most persistent and urgent question is,
what are you doing for others"
~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Colleagues:

I recently celebrated a remarkable six months as Executive Director of Governmental and Community Relations with the University of Houston. Throughout this period of acclamation I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in the UH culture and truly understand and share the University's vision.

The goal is to become a Tier One community-serving University. We are currently in the process of developing a committee devoted to organizing community service events. The committee's ultimate purpose will be to provide, plan and organize community service events for the participation of a united campus.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best when he asked, "What are you doing for others?" This is why the MLK Day celebration on January 28, 2013, will be the kick-off to our community service year and every year thereafter. I know our UH family is already doing so much for our community, and we would love to hear about your involvement.

 * I ask that if you have participated in community service events in 2012 please send pictures and event descriptions to Renia Lusby-Butler at rslusby at central.uh.edu<mailto:rslusby at central.uh.edu>.
 * If you have upcoming community service events please email Sara Lujan at selujan at uh.edu<mailto:selujan at uh.edu> with a description.
 * If you would like to participate and gain information and connections to community service events please attend the celebration of MLK Day on January 28.

January 21 will be community service day, where you will have the opportunity to participate in any community service event of your choosing. I challenge you to form community service teams in your department, and have a goal of committing to a minimum of two community service events a year. Below are a few options you may choose from. Please remember to send us pictures. We want everyone to know that UH serves the community.

 *   Food Bank
 *   Clean Campus
 *   Habitat for Humanity
 *   Red Cross
 *   YMCA
