Dear Cullen College Faculty, Staff and Members of our Leadership Board,

A new school year has begun, and with it comes exciting news in many areas here at the Cullen College of Engineering. Join me in extending a warm greeting to our new engineering faculty, staff and students. This year's enrollment has increased sharply to a record 4600 students, with a strong freshman class placing top-level in high school ranking and SAT scores.

This month, we received the outstanding news that the Cullen College has placed a perfect record in the National Science Foundation CAREER Award grant competition, with all six of our applicants receiving the honor this year. The latest winner is Jeffrey Rimer, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering. Rimer won a five-year, $400,000 grant for the improvement of zeolites, a type of catalyst used in the petroleum and chemical industries to create a range of different products, from ion-exchange additives in detergents to gasoline and alternative fuels.

I'd also like to recognize assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering Wei-Chuan Shih, who has won two major grants in recent weeks. One is to develop an environmental monitoring system for space missions. The three-year, $600,000 grant was awarded by NASA and its inaugural Space Technology Research Opportunities for Early Career Faculty grant program. Shih's collaborators include assistant professors Debora Rodrigues with the civil and environmental engineering department and Jacinta Conrad with the chemical and biomolecular engineering department. Shih's second grant comes from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), a three-year, $740,000 grant to devise an oil leak detection tool for unmanned offshore rigs.

Yet another 2012 grant was awarded to Cumaraswamy "Vipu" Vipulanandan, professor of civil engineering and director of the Center for Innovative Grouting Materials and Technology. He won a $2.5 million, three-year grant from the non-profit Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop offshore cementing and drilling materials. Oil Field services firm Baker Hughes provided additional funding of $500,000. Vipulanandan's collaborators include Ramanan Krishnamoorti, chair of the UH Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. We are extremely proud of these achievements, and those of our other faculty that continue to shape and strengthen our research program.

I'm pleased to announce that NASA astronaut and UH alumna Dr. Bonnie Dunbar will visit the University of Houston campus tomorrow. Dunbar completed her doctorate in biomedical/mechanical engineering in 1983, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. A highly-respected and well-known scientist, she is a veteran of five space flights, and has advocated widely for STEM education. We're honored to welcome Dr. Dunbar at the Cullen College.

The National Academy of Engineering Wall of Fame Dedication Ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 4, at 3:30 p.m. in the Engineering Commons. All faculty and staff are invited to attend this event honoring University of Houston National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Science Members, at which Chancellor Renu Khator will preside.
