ABSTRACT
Employing embedded systems with sensor network to monitor underwater oil pipelines systems has been investigated by many researchers. This work presents results of a monitoring system using microcontrollers, sensors and communication via optical and RF links. The system mainly focuses on detecting the motion, position and the temperature of underwater pipelines. In the project, wireless optical communication is employed to monitor deep underwater pipeline systems while RF communication is considered for above or shallow water applications. The proposed system provides continuous data logging of the position, acceleration and temperature of the pipeline using sensors MMA8451Q, MAG3110 and the inbuilt temperature sensor. Long term deployment requirements for these applications dictate for an autonomous mode of operation. As such an energy harvesting system that meets the system's power requirement was designed and demonstrated.
