Description
This course is of interest and value to a broad student demographic across
schools and departments. It is particularly useful to Ph.D. students as
well as to undergraduate students with pre-med orientation. The syllabus
features a rare combination of `hands-on' experiences coupled
with historical and social perspectives. Two issues fundamental to modern
science, publications and human/animal studies, are given special attention
and constitute the practicum component of the course. Students may choose
to focus on one or the other depending on their orientation and interests. *

Students who choose the scientific publication track are assigned to senior
investigators who act as mentors. The students are engaged in supervised
peer review training of actual manuscripts, under special agreements
between the journal editors and the investigators. This is a unique
opportunity not only to understand in practice how proper peer reviewing is
done, but also to get to know first hand the ins and outs of the
"publication game".****

** **

Students who choose the human/animal studies track are assigned to labs in
the University of Houston or the Medical Schools, where they participate
under supervision in the administration of human or animal experiments and
other relevant activities.****

** **

Practical training is accompanied by theoretical instruction in class,
debate sessions, and documentary films. The class is also linked to a track
of seminars on grand issues of science, medicine, and society given by
nationally prominent figures.****

This course initiative is supported by an institutional NSF Science Ethics
award (http://www.uh.edu/ethicsinscience/index.php). ****
