Dear Cullen College Faculty, Staff and Members of our Leadership Board,

Season's Greetings! As we approach Fall 2012 commencement, I'd like to thank everyone for your outstanding work this semester. We have much to celebrate as we continue our journey towards becoming a nationally competitive program. We will honor the achievements of our students at the graduation ceremony on Friday, December 21 at 7 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion. I would like to encourage everyone to attend this event.

Here are a few announcements that I'd like to share with you:

CAREER: We are extremely pleased to announce that assistant professor of mechanical engineering Haleh Ardebili has won a 2013 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Ardebili received the five-year, $400,000 grant to explore the development of flexible, stretchable lithium ion batteries. One of the most prestigious awards given in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, the CAREER Award is designed to launch prolific research careers of junior-level faculty. Congratulations to Dr. Ardebili for this tremendous achievement!

CPRIT: Navin Varadarajan, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and Badrinath Roysam, electrical and computer engineering department chair, have received a three-year, $1.3M grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The focus of this research will improve our understanding of the therapeutic benefit of genetically modified T cell infusion to target leukemias and lymphomas in clinical trials.

ASME Fellow: Pradeep Sharma, chair of mechanical engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Fellow is the highest elected membership level within the ASME. It recognizes individuals for exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession.

NAI Charter Fellow: Benton Baugh, distinguished adjunct professor of mechanical engineering, has been selected as a National Academy of Inventors Charter Fellow. The Selection Committee chooses members "who have demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society."

QNRF Grant: Debora Rodrigues, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, has recently won a $1M grant from the Qatar National Research Fund, to develop a water monitoring system that blocks disease- and corrosion-causing bacteria in real time.

ONR: Karolos Grigoriadis and Matt Franchek, both professors in mechanical engineering, have received a three-year, $561,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research to develop a system that automatically delivers cardiovascular medications to soldiers wounded on the battlefield. They are working with physicians at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

I wish you and your family a wonderful, safe holiday break.

Warm regards,
