Prof. Samuel Mao

Abstract:
This presentation will provide a brief introduction of the general scope of the research the speaker is pursuing, followed by a discussion of an enabling high throughput material discovery technology, and the recent progress in two specific areas of clean energy technology: the realization of nanocrystal-polymer light emitting diodes, and the concept of black titanium dioxide with enhanced solar-driven photocatalytic activity.

 Bio:
Dr. Samuel Mao is a Director of Clean Energy Engineering Laboratory at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and an adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley. His research is focused on the development of clean energy technologies as well as the study of enabling materials science. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 2000, and has published about 100 articles that have received over 8000 citations. He also contributed five book chapters and is an inventor of 14 patents. He has delivered more than 60 invited talks at various international conferences and academic institution. He is the co-founder of three international conference series: the First International Symposium on Transparent Conducting Oxides, the First International Conference on Energy Nanotechnology, and the First International Workshop on Renewable Energy. He was a general chair for the MRS annual meeting in the spring of 2011, and will be a co-chair for the 12th International Conference on Clean Energy in 2012. He has served as a technology committee member, national laboratory observer, program review panelist, and grant evaluator for the Department of Energy, as well as government of Canada, Japan, and China. He is also a board member of three high tech companies in the clean energy industry.
