Faculty and Staff,
Good things are happening at the Cullen College! We recently charted the
college's progress over the last five years and we are experiencing positive
growth in every major area that matters-enrollment, number of faculty,
research expenditures and financial support. We are very excited to share
this news with you, as it overwhelmingly demonstrates your dedication to
making the Cullen College a top 50 engineering program nationwide.

Enrollment
Our enrollment has grown more than 40 percent in the last five years. With
over 3,200 students, the college is now home to more than 600 incoming
freshman students, a 60 percent growth from our 2007 enrollment numbers.
Although difficult to attribute to any one reason, we believe this growth is
due to UH's Tier One push, our undergraduate student recruitment activities
and new programs such as our petroleum engineering undergraduate program,
which continues to draw incredible interest from prospective students. In
addition, with the launch of our new Pre-Engineering Program, we hope to
retain large numbers of these students in our programs.
Faculty
With the redevelopment of the college's strategic plan in 2008, one of the
major areas needing growth was overall number of tenured and tenure-track
faculty. To be a nationally-competitive program, we should have more than
120 engineering faculty at UH. This semester alone, we added nine new
faculty to our college, bringing our total to 105. This marks a 20 percent
growth since 2007. Furthermore, during this same period, the college added
four members of the National Academy of Engineering, all of whom have
changed their official NAE affiliation to UH. This is extremely significant,
as it factors in UH's Top American Research Universities (TARU) ranking from
the Center for Measuring University Performance, one of the three
organizations nationally accepted as determining a university's Tier One
status.

Research Expenditures
Our research expenditures have doubled over the past five years. Last year,
college-wide expenditures hit an all-time high of $22.6 million. As
importantly, our research portfolio continues to diversify across all four
of our major research thrust areas, indicating that we are strengthening
across the board.
Financial Support
Five years ago, the college was raising between $2-$3 million in support
annually. This past year, I am happy to report the college received more
than $12 million in support and gifts-in-kind for student scholarships,
chairs and professorships, and our academic and research programs. We
continually receive interest from corporations and major gift prospects,
which definitely reflects the forward progress we are currently making.
Thank you for your dedication and support in helping the Cullen College lead
Tier One!
Warm regards,
