Canister Modeling and Purge Control

In production vehicles, canister purge is treated as an uncertain disturbance to the A/F control system.  This in turn places unnecessary regulating demands on the air-fuel ratio regulating controller which is limited in performance due to transport delays.   This research focuses on the development of a feed-forward purge controller that coordinates the purge command with the existing engine fueling controller for improved air-fuel ratio regulation. In particular, a model based approach is developed that estimates the quantity of fuel vapor released during a canister purge event.  Based on this estimation, the corresponding reduction in fuel delivery is calculated based on a steady state model.  To accomplish these objectives, an online adaptive purge canister model was developed which estimates the state of the canister. This model will be adapted based on fuel tank pressure and tank level information, the UEGO sensor information during the purge event and temperature as the vehicle soaks. This adaptive model provides an estimate of fuel vapor flow from the canister during a purge event and allows for better coordination between purge and the A/F control.
