[cid:image004.jpg at 01CBED58.AAE83240]Dr. Luis Ibáñez is a Technical Leader at Kitware, Inc . He is one of the lead developers of the widely used Insight Toolkit (ITK), and coordinates its maintenance with other developers and the user community; he is also one of the main developers of the Image Guided Surgery Toolkit (IGSTK). Luis Ibáñez is a strong supporter of Open Access, and the verification of reproducibility in scientific publications. He crafted the operational principles of the Insight Journal, the first reproducibility-enforcing Journal in the domain of image analysis. He is a regular speaker in ITK training courses, and in events disseminating the principles of Open Source. In collaboration with other instructors, he has been teaching a course on Open Source Software Practices at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 2007.

Dr. Ibáñez received a B.S. in Physics from the Universidad Industrial de Santander (Bucaramanga, Colombia) in 1989 and a M.S. in Optics from the same university in 1994. He received a D.E.A and Ph.D. degrees from the Universite de Rennes I (Rennes, France) in 1995 and 2000, respectively. In 1999, he joined the Division of Neurosurgery of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as a Research Assistant Professor, where he worked on 2D/3D registration algorithms for surgical guidance and later participated in the initial design and implementation of the Insight Toolkit. In 2002 he joined Kitware in
Albany, NY and since then he has been actively participating in the development and maintenance of ITK, and the continuous promotion of open source and peer-production.
The lectures are open to the UH Community.
