College Faculty and Staff,

The University of Houston recently received a significant gift from the
Houston Endowment to support doctorate programs throughout the university.
The Cullen College was fortunate to receive an allocation from the
university in the amount of $277,800 to support graduate assistantships,
stipend supplements and graduate student recruiting for our biomedical,
civil, chemical and electrical and computer engineering doctoral programs.
The college has appropriated funds to support these initiatives for our
mechanical engineering doctorate program as well.

We also received an additional $440,000 in research assistant support from
the provost. This funding allowed us to grant additional resources to
faculty who are currently supporting graduate students on external research
contracts and grants. These funds were equitably distributed among our
graduate programs based on the total percentage of graduate students
supported in each department on external grants. Based on those numbers, our
department chairs made faculty recommendations for these awards.

SBIR-STTR Workshop: Thank you to all the faculty, staff and students who
attended our SBIR-STTR Workshop. If you were unable to participate in the

OTC: The UH Cullen College of Engineering will have a booth at the upcoming
Offshore Technology Conference to promote the Energy Research Park and
Cullen College energy initiatives such as our petroleum engineering program
and developing subsea certificate program.

Communications Awards: Congratulations to our Office of Communications for
receiving seven regional awards from the Council for the Advancement and
Support of Education (CASE, Region IV) for projects completed in 2010!
Parameters magazine received both an Award of Excellence and Special Award
in two different categories; Cullen College eNews received an Achievement
Award in the e-newsletter category; and photography won a total of four
awards (Grand, Award of Excellence, Achievement Award and Special Award) in
a various categories.
