All:
Many of you are inquiring about the NSF requirement for a Data Management
Plan. Professor Harold was kind enough to share his first stab at one for a
grant he has due next week..... Below are my modifications
for a grant I have due to NSF next month. Many thanks to Mike... please
free to use as you see fit.

*Data Management Plan*
The purpose of this proposal is to obtain NSF support for a thematic
Research Experience for Teachers (RET) site at the University of Houston
(UH) entitled “Innovations in Nanotechnology”, to be conducted during the
summers of 2011-2013. The six week program is designed to infuse 12 bright
teachers each year with enthusiasm for the field of engineering and
knowledge about nanotechnology research that will be subsequently shared
with their respective middle and high school classes. The *deliverables *of
this project includes the following four items:
*1) *Teachers will be encouraged to display their research poster in
their classroom when they return to school.
*2) *Participants will implement their Legacy Cycle nanotechnology
modules during the subsequent academic year.
*3) *As part of the requirements of our RET program, all RET
participants will be required to submit to teachenginering.org by April 1
following their RET summer experience.
*4) *Assessment results based on Kirkpatrick as one of four levels:
Reactions, Learning, Transfer, and Results.
Considerations concerning the means of types of data, data and results
dissemination, standards, access policies, data exchange, and archival plans
are as follows.
*Types of Data.** *The project will lead to both research results and
teacher developed lessons and activities. Lab notebooks, manuscript drafts,
and presentations will also contain data and findings.
*Means of Data/Results Dissemination.* The investigators of this project
are committed to ensuring that the findings from this project are widely
disseminated. An effective way is to publish the findings in peer-reviewed
journals and in presenting the findings at regional and national
conferences. Additionally, as mentioned above, teacher modules will be
submitted to teachengineering.org. We also expect that the collaboration
with teacher participants will be used in other projects carried out by the
PI and the senior personnel listed in the proposal. So it is likely that
data from these studies will be reported in presentations and publications.
*Standards Used.** *The PI and Co-PI have considerable experience with
managing research programs. Each will follow their established disciplined
approach to data collection and storage, both in electronic and hard copy
forms. No unique standards need to be developed for the current project.
* *
*Policies for Access.* Finally, to ensure wide access of the findings to the
general public, we will post major findings on our RET website. Should any
research findings be considered patentable, patent disclosures will be filed
by UH. This will not undermine the plan to publish. **
* *
*Data Exchange.* To ensure an efficient sharing of information between (UH)
and other interested parties, a password-protected website managed by UH is
available.
* *
*Archiving Plans.* The PI (F. Claydon) and Co-PI (D. Rodrigues) are
responsible for ensuring that design documents, calculations and
measurements from this project are properly archived at the University of
Houston. Electronic data will be stored on computer hard drives and backed
up by the University of Houston computer system
