Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff,
Welcome back for the start of the spring semester!
As you've undoubtedly heard, today was a tremendous day for the University of Houston and its research programs. The Carnegie Foundation announced that UH has been given the highest classification possible for research universities, elevating UH to what is considered Tier One status alongside The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University. Very well done!
As President Khator alluded to in her letter to the UH community, the work has just begun. However, take a moment to congratulate one another for making a considerable amount of marked progress in the last couple of years.
We have a busy semester ahead of us. Here's a list of several upcoming events, faculty achievements and announcements that I'd like to share with you:
Major Gifts: I am very pleased to announce that one of our chemical engineering alumni, Dr. William Brookshire, has given a $2 million gift to the Cullen College of Engineering to establish an endowment for engineering student scholarships. Dr. Brookshire is the chairman of S&B Engineering and one of the college's distinguished alumni. This contribution is the second major gift he has given the college recently. Last spring, he established a $1 million endowment to provide financial support for our working students. We are very fortunate for Dr. Brookshire's continued support of our programs and our students!
Faculty Accolades: Congratulations to Richard Willson in ChBE for being named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Peter Vekilov in ChBE for being named a fellow of the American Physical Society. Also, Dmitri Litvinov in ECE is now serving as president of the UH faculty senate.
Houston Angel Network: The University of Houston through the Cullen College of Engineering is now a member of the Houston Angel Network, a non-profit organization established to evaluate and provide funding opportunities for early-stage investments.
Upcoming Events:
Subsea Engineering Program Kick-off
Jan. 19, 2011
The pilot course for our developing Subsea Engineering Program will begin with a course in Flow Assurance. We have engineers from FMC Technologies, GE Oil and Gas, and Cameron participating in this program, the only one of its kind in the nation.
Engineering Day
Feb. 10, 2011
We will be hosting Swedish engineers from the Karolinska Institute and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. There will be a lecture scheduled in the morning. Details are forthcoming.
National Engineers Week
Feb. 20-26, 2011
SBIR-STTR Workshop

Once again, thank you for your continued support of the UH Cullen College of Engineering!
