Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff,

As most of you have heard, Cullen Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering
Dr. Neal Amundson passed away on Wednesday. He was an extraordinary chemical
engineering researcher and educator and was involved in building some of the
greatest chemical engineering programs in the country, including our own. In
the coming week, we will post a tribute to Neal and his impact on the
profession to our website, so please be looking for it.

On that note, we recently launched the redesign of our website. Our
communications group has been working diligently on bringing our website
into compliance with the UH brand through the development of a new college
site and new department sites.

Here are a few more initiatives, events and announcements that I'd like to
share with you:

Houston Endowment Fund: We have been informed that the Cullen College will
receive $227,000 a year for five years from the Houston Endowment Fund to
support our Ph.D. programs. We will receive another $440,000 from Provost
Antel for research assistantships.

SBIR-STTR Workshop: We will be hosting a SBIR-STTR Workshop on March 4 from
8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UH Hilton Hotel. Representatives from the
Houston Technology Center, the Greater Houston Partnership, BioHouston and
local small businesses will be in attendance. All faculty, staff and
research students are welcome to register. For more information, visit our
website <http://www.egr.uh.edu/news/0211/?e=sbirworkshop> or contact Janice
Quiroz <mailto:jquiroz at uh.edu> .

NSF ADVANCE Grant: We are making preparations as a university to submit an
NSF Advance grant. The ADVANCE program is focused on advancing women in
academic STEM careers. The grant is spearheaded by the college and Provost
Antel. Last week, we sent out a self-assessment survey to all faculty. I
encourage you to participate in this anonymous survey as it will greatly
help our efforts to prepare for this grant.

OTC: The UH Cullen College of Engineering will have a booth at the upcoming
Offshore Technology Conference to promote UH Energy, the Energy Research
Park and Cullen College energy initiatives such as our petroleum engineering
program and developing subsea certificate program.

EWeek: Next week is National Engineers Week. There will be events across the
nation celebrating the impact of the engineering profession. Wayne Klotz, an
alum and member of our leadership board, was named Engineer of the Year for
the Houston area by the Houston Engineers EWeek Committee. He graduated with
a master's degree from our civil engineering program. This news will be part
of a special EWeek section of the Houston Business Journal next week.

Warm regards,
