Dear Engineering Faculty, Researchers, and Grad Students,
In the light of the recent award of the Nobel Physics Prize to the
discoverers of graphene, a mini seminar on "Graphene Synthesis by
Chemical Vapor Deposition" has been scheduled at 102D from 11:30 a.m. to
1 p.m. on Thurs. 10/21.
"Two years ago, three independent groups - one led by University of
Houston's Qingkai Yu and Purdue University's Yong Chen, another by MIT's
Jing Kong, and a third by Byung Hee Hong the Sungkyunkwan University
(SKKU) in South Korea - did just that, using chemical vapor deposition
of methane to catalyze the growth of a few layers (typically less than
10) of graphene on polycrystalline nickel. The graphene was then
patterned lithographically or transferred onto square-centimeter wafers
of glass, Si, or plastic." -- Physics Today, August 2010.
Dr. Qingkai Yu of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the
UH Center for Advanced Materials will give a short presentation and lead
a group discussions of potential research opportunities.
Sponsors: Dr. Badri Roysam, Chair of Electrical and Computer
Engineering
Dr. Steven Pei, Deputy Director of Center for Advanced
Materials
