Organic Monolayers, Networks, Electrochemistry: A Toolbox for the Nanoscale

Manfred Buck

Chemistry Department
University of Sent Andrews, United Kingdom

Spontaneous assembly of organic molecules at surfaces is a powerful concept for surface fictionalization and formation of ultra precise structures. In combination with electrochemistry, strategies based on chemisorption from solution and supramolecular chemistry offer new routes to achieve the low dimensional systems and templated generation of structures. Presenting examples where self-assembly concepts and electrochemistry are exploited to their mutual benefit, opportunities and challenges for accessing the nanoscale are discussed.

Bio of Prof. Manfred Buck:

Dr. Buck obtained his PhD. in Physical Chemistry from University of Heidelberg, Germany, 1988. He did his postdoc at IBM Research labs in San Jose, (1988-1989). From 1989-2000 he has held appointment at University of Heidelberg in Applied Physical Chemistry Deportment as an assistant and associate professor. In 2000, Dr. Buck moved to University of St. Andrews where he is currently a professor of Chemistry. Dr. Buck is the fellow of German Science Foundation, and he was visiting professor at University of Krakow and University of Ulm.
