EFFICIENT APPROACHES FOR UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS IN
ELETROMAGNETIC SIMULATIONS

The thesis discusses computationally efficient ways to account for the impact of uncertainty, e.g., lack of detailed knowledge about material electrical
properties, system geometrical features, source excitations, etc., in both time domain and frequency-domain computational electromagnetics. In contrast to
classic statistical Monte Carlo methods, we explore a probabilistic approach based on high-order polynomial expansions of general stochastic processes. We show this to be highly efficient and accurate on an extensive set of electromagnetic problems, enabling the extraction of global sensitivities and computation for the impact of uncertainties on simulation results (e.g., backscattered field and radar cross-sections in scattering applications, induced electric current inside human body due to MRI coil exposure in bio-electromagnetic studies) for various types of uncertainties.
